Someone asked about dark fantasy. I don’t usually think of books that way, but some of these might do.
Tanya Huff has a nice series about a vampire and a police officer teaming up to fight off supernatural horrors. All the titles start with “Blood,” e.g. “Blood Price,” the first one. I like this series.
Barbara Hambly has a series that starts with “Dragonsbane,” which has dragons and magic in a ruined landscape, and also gets into demons and other universes in later books.
Hambly also has a duology about vampires in Victorian times. The first book is “Those Who Hunt the Night.”
Laurell K. Hamilton has a series about faerie in modern-day U.S.A. I think the first one is “A Kiss of Shadows.” (It’s up to 5 books now I think.)
Hamilton also has one that is about werewolves, vampires, and zombies in St. Louis. It starts with “Guilty Pleasures.” (12 books in all?) Both these series start out reasonably active and end up more and more steamy romance until you wish the characters would get out of bed and do something.
