The Board’s Junior Math Challenge will be held on Saturday, February 2nd from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Bishop Ryan Catholic Secondary School. An awards ceremony will follow at 1:30 p.m. Jointly sponsored by the Ontario English Catholic Teachers Association – Hamilton-Wentworth Unit and Trustees of the Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School Board, the competition invites junior division students from each school to experience fun-filled and thought-provoking mathematical adventures. Students develop their ability to think and reason, build number sense and computational skills, problem solve and explore various real-life mathematical situations. The teams are made up of two students from Grades 4, 5 and 6 who will work alone, in pairs and as a group to solve problems and create mathematical solutions as they rotate through five mathematical centres. These centres focus on different math areas, including problem-solving, mental math, geometry, measurement and number, calculators, and various creative, thought-provoking puzzles. The Junior Math Challenge is a wonderful opportunity for participants to meet new friends as more than 300 junior division students throughout the system come out for a day of mathematical adventure.
