Israel at 60

Sixty years ago, Palestine was divided and Israel was created. The next day, the Arab countries invaded, but they were fought off. Since then, it has been a rough ride. Israel has endured sixty years of war (Syreia is still officially at war with it) and forty years of conflict.

  • The Arabs invaded again in 1967 on Yom Kippur, hoping to catch the Jews at their prayers. Israel repelled the invasion and took over the Golan Heights, which overlook it. Israel controls and oppresses its Palestinian workers.
  • Peace and security are still distant dreams.
  • Almost all the kibbutzim have been privatized
  • Nadia Hilou is the only female Arab in the Knesset.
  • Social divisions remain.

Benazir Bhutto dies in suicide assassination

Benazir Bhutto, the former Prime Minister of Pakistan, has been assassinated like her father before her. The agent was a suicide bomber on a motorcycle, who zoomed into her motorcade after a political rally. She was the first female prime minister of Pakistan or indeed of a Muslim country. After allegations of corruption, she left the country for several years. But she was back and contending an election against President Musharref that was to be held January 8th. Musharref’s manoeuverings against the country’s Supreme Court worked only partially, and he agreed to stand down as army commander before the election.

It seemed to me that Bhutto herself was confrontational too early — before she had established a foothold. But that should not be a death sentence.

Now this is taking camping it up a little far!

Steve Cooper, an unemployed British man, has become a professional goddess in India.

Polish exchange student lands in strange culture

A Polish exchange student gets more than he expected when he landed among Christian fundamentalists.

U.S. prez scorns Common Law, breaks constitution

For literally centuries, since 1215, the law of habeus corpus has meant that, officially at least, the law had to have a body (corpus) of evidence that a crime had been committed before holding people prisoner. It is part of the British Common law and thus part of American law tradition. Theoretically, it’s enshrined in the U.S. constitution. But now, under the guise of making its citiezens more secure, the U.S. has swept away that protection from them.

Thai coup called inevitable by senator

A Thai senator has stated that the abuses of power by the Thai government made a coup to dislodge them inevitable.

Kraisak Choonhavan, who was chairman of the Thai Senate’s Committee on Foreign Affairs before the coup, said he was very reluctant to support any coups.

“But, however, the elected government of Mr Thaksin has put Thailand in an incredible situation - namely the widespread human rights violations in the south, this complete disregard for parliamentary procedures, widespread corruption and most importantly his use of extra-judiciary means to maintain power.

“So-called democracy has been almost completely wiped out under Mr Thaksin.”

…Meanwhile, a senior Thai opposition figure says the coup was a sad testament to how much Mr Thaksin had warped Thai democracy.

Steve Irwin’s memorial service was today

Steve IrwinI heard about Steve Irwin’s memorial service on BookCrossing, and saw about half of it. There were many tributes and touching moments. The government has given the Irwin family permission to bury him on the grounds of the Australia Zoo. There’s more coverage here.

This fable is sentimental, but I like it: “Interesting day on rainbow bridge.”

Wafa Sultan

“Stand up:
Wafa Sultan is passing”

Wafa Sultan on Islam

Listen to Arab-American doctor Wafa Sultan speaking on Al-Jazeera TV in Qatar, 21 Feb. 2006. Others’ words are in block letters (Professor Ibrahim Al-Khouli and unidentified cleric, red; interview moderator, green italic).

Dr Sultan:
“The clash we are witnessing around the world
is not a clash of religions or a clash of civilizations.
it is a clash between opposites, between two eras.
It is a clash between a mentality that belongs to the middle ages
and another mentality that belongs to the 21st century.

It is a clash between civilization and backwardness,
between the civilized and the primitive,
between barbarity and rationality.

It is a clash between freedom and oppression.
It is a clash between democracy and dictatorship.
It is a clash between human rights, on the one hand,
and the violation of those rights, on the other hand.

It is a clash between those who treat women like beasts
and those who treat them like human beings.

What we see today is not a clash of civilizations.
Civilizations do not clash, but compete.”

I UNDERSTAND FROM YOUR WORDS THAT WHAT IS HAPPENING TODAY IS A CLASH BETWEEN THE CULTURE OF THE WEST AND THE BACKWARDNESS AND IGNORANCE OF THE MUSLIMS?

“”Yes, that is what I mean.”

WHO CAME UP WITH THE CONCEPT OF A CLASH OF CIVILIZATIONS?
WAS IT NOT SAMUEL HUNTINGTON?
IT WAS NOT BIN LADEN.
I SHOULD LIKE TO DISCUSS THIS ISSUE, IF YOU DON’T MIND.

“The Muslims are the ones who began using this expression.
The Muslims are the ones who began the clash of civilizations.

The prophet of Islam said:
‘I was ordered to fight the people until they believe in Allah and His messenger.’
When the Muslims divided the people into Muslims and non-Muslims,
and called to fight the others
until they believe in what they themselves believe,
they started this clash and began this war.

In order to stop this war,
they must re-examine their Islamic books and curricula.
which are full of calls for takfir and fighting the infidels.

My colleague has said that he never offends other people’s beliefs.
What civilization on the face of this earth allows him
to call other people by names they did not choose for themselves?
Once he calls them Ahl Al-Dhimma,
another time he calls them the “People of the Book”
and yet another time he compares them to apes and pigs.
Or he calls the Christians “those who incur Allah’s wrath.”
Who told you they are “People of the Book”?
They are not the People of the Book, they are people of many books
All the useful scientific books that you have today are theirs,
the fruit of their free and creative thinking.
What gives you the right to call them, “Those who incur Allah’s wrath” or “those who have gone astray”
and then come here and say that your religion commands you
to refrain from offending the beliefs of others?

I am not a Christian, a Muslim, or a Jew. I am a secular human being.
I do not believe in the supernatural, but I respect others’ right to believe in it.”

ARE YOU A HERETIC?

“You can say whatever you like.
I am a secular human being who does not believe in the supernatural—”

IF YOU ARE A HERETIC, THERE IS NO POINT IN REBUKING YOU,
SINCE YOU HAVE BLASPHEMED AGAINST ISLAM, THE PROPHET, AND THE KORAN—

“Those are personal matters that do not concern you.

Brother, you can believe in stones, as long as you don’t throw them at me.

You are free to worship whomever you want.
but other people’s beliefs are not your concern,
whether they believe that the Messiah is God, son of Mary,
or that Satan is God, son of Mary.
Let people have their beliefs.

The Jews came from the tragedy
and forced the world to respect them
with their knowledge, not their terror;
with their work, not their crying and yelling.

Humanity owes most of the discoveries and science of the 19th and 20th centuries to Jewish scientists.
Fifteen million people, scattered throughout the world, united and won their rights through work and knowledge.

We have not seen a single Jew blow himself up in a German restaurant.
We have not seen a single Jew destroy a church.
We have not seen a single Jew protest by killing people.

The Muslims have turned three Buddha statues into rubble.
We have not seen a single Buddhist burn down a mosque, kill a Muslim, or burn down an embassy.

Only the Muslims defend their beliefs by burning down churches,
killing people, and destroying embassies.
That path will not yield any results.

The Muslims must ask themselves what they can do for humankind
before they demand that humankind respect them.”
