Liz wants a puppy

Liz has signed up to get a puppy. It’s still with the breeder. Here’s a picture of the litter of pups with their mom.

Windoc bridge accident, 2001

Linked from the Wikiepedia article about the Welland Canal, I found a YouTube video of a bridge accident. In 2001, the merchant vessel Windoc was passing under the Allanburg bridge on the Welland Canal when the bridge master carelessly lowered the bridge onto her. Talk about lowering the boom! Coincidentally, someone was filming the ship and caught the accident in progress.

Cat pictures

I pleasantly wasted some time looking at pictures of cats taken by someone else, in picturesque surroundings. Some of them are merely OK; others are lovely.

Books: Empire of Ivory by Naomi Novik

Naomi Novik fulfills the promise of her previous books. The fourth book in the Temeraire series book begins in the midst of an air battle, shortly after the end of the previous book. The dragons, Temeraire and the feral troupe from Asia, are battling their way back to England, carrying Prussian soldiers rescued from Napoleon. There they find a mysterious lack of support: no dragon rises to help them against the French dragons. When they land, they find out why: an epizootic has made all the dragons ill and some have died. Eventually a clue leads them on a desperate search for a cure in Africa—where they find yet more surprises.

Dessert breads

I made bread pudding for dessert last night.

And Firegirl has a pumpkin bread recipe and there are other recipes in the discussion thread.
