Useless crafts

Record candy dish (image from Flickr)

If anyone happens to have a useless plastic disk that they don’t want in its original form, such as a CD or a record, they can place it on an upended (empty) can in the oven and turn the oven on low to moderate.  Keep an eye on it and turn it down if it starts to smoke. Try 300 degrees F. for one minute and keep the oven door open a crack so you can watch it.

The plastic softens and melts around the can in attractive wave pattern. Turn it off and let it cool and re-solidify.

The diameter of the can is the diameter of the resulting candy dish or snack serving dish. You can fill the hole in the bottom with clear glue.

Isn’t there something about the heating of plastics that leaches out some REALLY unpleasant and carcinogenic chemicals?

    I don’t know–vinyl chlorides maybe. I guess I won’t sniff it til it’s cool.
