Frame knitting

I’m not sure what this should be called. There’s a way of making a frame from a box and then using it to knit without needles. Instead, loops of yarn are cast over crenellations on the frame and then looped over one another and cast off into the centre. A project such a tube or length of knitting grows in the middle. However, I wasn’t quite able to sort out what to do, which way to loop, how to change directions, and how to make stockinette or garter stitches.
